San Francisco–based DJ and producer BLK&WHT is set to unveil the Control EP on July 18, the inaugural release from Pressure Makes Diamonds’ new label, Us & Machines. Crafted as a two-track statement rooted in raw industrial percussion and soulful vocal hooks, Control captures the underground warehouse energy that has shaped his sets across the West Coast. Ahead of the drop, BLK&WHT traces his creative roots, unpacks the protest spirit behind the record, and shares what comes next for this rising voice in tech house.

Q: How would you describe the emotional core of your sound as BLK&WHT?

A: The name BLK&WHT says a lot—we lean into duality. The emotional core comes from embracing extremes: raw vulnerability next to bold confidence, minimal grooves next to rich melodic layers. It’s dance music with a personality crisis, in the best way.

Q: Your productions blend grit with groove. What does your creative process look like when you’re building a track from scratch?

A: I usually start with a melody or a vocal—something that sparks a vibe—and then build the rest of the track around that. From there I layer drums and textures, blending gritty elements like distorted synths or crunchy percussion with smoother grooves that keep the track moving. Dirty but danceable, underground yet catchy: the magic lives in that balance between chaos and control.

Q: How do you decide when a track is finished, especially in a genre where repetition is part of the art?

A: A track feels finished when every element is in conversation—locked to the groove and evolving just enough to stay alive. I trust my ear and my body: if it makes me move and nothing feels missing, it’s done.

Q: Is there a particular synth, sample, or sound that has become a signature for you?

A: My Moog DFAM. Its raw, percussive tone gives my music a gritty, organic texture that cuts through the mix. Whether layered subtly or driving the rhythm, that DFAM sound often glues the vibe together.

Q: What is your approach to building a set for a room you’ve never played before?

A: I feel out the room and crowd first—energy, layout, how people move. I bring a wide range of tracks so I can adapt, but I have a few anchor tunes that define my sound and can reset the vibe. It’s less about a strict setlist and more about a journey that responds in real time.

Q: What track (yours or someone else’s) never leaves your USB?

    A: “BLK&WHT, Amprs&nd, Dances – Out Past 2.” It’s a staple in all my sets.

Q: How do you keep your sets feeling spontaneous but still intentional?

A: I prep a lot of music that fits my sound, organized by energy, vibe, and key. That lets me react in the moment while staying on brand. Unreleased material and live edits keep things fresh; the crate holds the intention, the room brings the spontaneity.

Q: Was there a defining moment when you knew music was more than a passion?

A: Absolutely. Playing a show and seeing a room full of strangers lock into something I made—watching them connect to a track born in my bedroom—made it click. That energy exchange is addictive; it turned passion into purpose.
